UPDATE: On Thursday, January 18th our maintenance crew checked the ice to determine thickness. An open area has formed in the center of the rink and perimeter ice has thinned significantly with warming temps. The rink will not open for the weekend of January 19th. We apologize for this inconvenience. Sunday’s temps are predicted to hit the low 50’s with substantial amounts of rain. By closing the rink we hope to preserve the surface of the ice, and re-open next week. Thank you for your patience.
Why didn’t we shovel the rink? This is a very valid question to ask. On Monday, January 18th we had between 2.5 and 3 inches of ice across the rink. That means that there was 6-8 inches of water underneath the ice. When it snowed overnight on Tuesday the weight of the snow pushed the ice down below the water level. On Wednesday morning when we went out to assess the ice there was a layer of slush several inches deep on top of the ice. This made removing the snow impossible. If warm temps were not in the immediate horizon we would attempt to flood the ice with more water. But as mother nature will be providing rain and 48 degree temps on Sunday we will let the rink flood naturally. Next week the temps are predicted to drop again and we should have a nice smooth skating surface.
