Themed Camps and Clubs 2020

Registration for the 2020 Themed Camps and Clubs will open March 2nd

BVRA offers a variety of specialized camps for kids of most ages.  These camps and clubs run 2-5 hours  each day, in one week blocks.  We work with a variety of community partner to offer themes that are exciting, engaging, and fun.   Research indicates that summer engagement is key to reduce learning loss over the summer. The Camps/clubs offer thematic half-day programs that challenge students to have fun and learn something new.

Themed Camps and club programs are held Monday- Friday and are 1/2 day programs. Please note the hours and days of each experience. Camps and clubs may be added, removed, or subject to change depending on registration and other circumstances. Check back for additional offerings!

Camps and clubs for Summer 2020 are:

Catapults Camp!
Ages: 9-13 (16 max registrations)
June 22 - 26
9 AM - 12 PM
Location: Community Tutoring Services,  424 1/2 Market Street Suite #3, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania 17837

Made structurally of pre-cut wood pieces, the catapults are constructed by students from scratch.  Students will use an assortment of pre-cut wooden pieces and simple accessories (such as dowels and paint stirrers) to build a catapult that will effectively launch ping pong ball sized objects.  Using engineering techniques to solidify the structure while also attributing to an artistic appeal, students will reinforce the wood’s bond with hot glue and then wood glue. All catapults begin with a simple structure to ensure a successful build, but then allows students to be creative with dowel placement, launch angle, and design details.  Throughout the camp, students will also need to use math skills to measure arm angle and distance of launch, as well as determine proportional relationships between them. Every student will be able to take home their completed work.

Rocketry Camp
Ages: 9-13 (16 max registrations)
June 29 - July 3
9 AM - 12 PM
Location: Lewisburg Area Recreation Park

Launch water rockets 100 feet in the air!
Build, paint, and launch!  Using simple constructs such as 2-Liter bottles, cardboard, and glue, students build a viable rocket that is launched using pressure.  Students will use engineering skills to construct efficient wings, a nose, and stability of the frame in order to achieve maximum height; students will also use math skills to determine the best proportions between the variables such as the amount of water in the rocket to pressure used during launch, and the results such as flight time and height.  When students launch, they will collect data such using an altimeter (height), radar gun (initial velocity), timer (time of flight) and a measuring wheel (horizontal distance). such as initial velocity, time of flight, and horizontal distance; this data will be used to make corrections and modify the rockets to then relaunch. All rockets will be painted with acrylic paint and sealed with a rubber sealant and are taken home at the end of the camp.  This is a great experience for students who like hands on building followed by some excitement for a successful construction!

Kayaking Camp (July 27- July 30):
Ages: 9 - 13 (18 max registrations)
9 AM - 1 PM
Location: Varies by Day.  First day is BIC Watersports in Lewisburg, PA

The waterways of Central Pennsylvania are ideal for kayaking and make the perfect learning environment for all stages of paddlers.  Over a four-day period, students will learn how to paddle in a kayak, analyze the river, and work independently and collaboratively along different stretches of the Susquehanna River and nearby creeks.   All students will become strong paddlers with the ability to paddle forward, backward, against the current, with the current, and through shoals. As the group paddles and explores the natures of the waterways, students will understand how to recognize the various sounds, flows, and colors of the water and use this knowledge to understand proper paths for kayaking.  Each day is a different route from launch to dock point, and includes various activities along the way, such as scavenger hunts, swimming, and cooperative games. The instructors, John and Talia Zangari-Ryan (Mr. and Mrs. Z-Ryan), are an engaging husband-and-wife duo with over 25 combined years of kayaking experience.  As well as local educators, the Z-Ryan’s are very familiar with the local waterways and First Aide and CPR certified. They are very enthusiastic to teach on the water and from a kayak. The camp will also be based upon the boats and accommodations of Bic’s Water Sports in Montandon.  They will be adhering to the logistics and gear for each kayaker, and will gladly make sure each Kayaker has the appropriate vests, paddles, and boats. Bic’s service is included in the cost of the program.

Know an older community member looking for a fun activity this summer? Looking for something to do with a grandchild? Believe in the unique benefits of inter-generational activities? Then we have just the activity for you!  BVRA is thrilled to introduce our new "Granny Camp"!  This program is designed to offer fun bonding activities for kids (ages 3-10) and older community members (anyone who believes they are of "grandparent age").  Our unique curriculum is intended to engage everyone in an environment that reminds us all to stay young at heart.  Activities will include: arts and crafts, gardening, modified yoga, a costume tea time, a scavenger hunt, and other fun ways to bond and enjoy time together.  You may register as a pair (grandparent and child) or as an individual (children can register alone, but must be supervised by a guardian).  We will attempt to pair up individual registrant with an individual of the other age group.  **Disclaimer**: "Granny" is used as a tongue-in-cheek term; and we invite older community members of all genders, mobility levels, and ages to join us!
