Indoor Swim Lessons

Indoor Swim Lessons Are Back!

Swim lessons are returning for the winter months.  Through a partnership with Riverwoods, BVRA is able to offer indoor lessons through the winter months with five sessions.  Three sessions are offered in the spring and two sessions are offered in the fall.  These classes are once a week for a six week session.  They are small group lessons and your group is the only ones in the pool.  Please Note: The Riverwoods pool has a minimum depth of 3 feet.  Any child who is not a proficient swimmer and cannot stand in the pool by themselves will need an adult to accompany them into the pool.   The pool is located on 217 Dogwood Drive in the Riverwoods Complex.

Riverwoods pool temperatures hover around 82-84 and is still cold for young children.  We highly....and WE MEAN HIGHLY recommend specific swimwear to help with the child's learning.  If the child is cold they are not able to focus on learning and are unable to stay in the water.  I did this for my child and his interest in water and swimming skyrocketed because he was warm and comfortable in the pool. Prior to that it was a battle every time.  We recommend 3mm - 5 mm thickness that helps with 60-85 degree water (good for pools outside in the summer).  Here are resources below for half wet suits or shorties as they are called in the industry.  There are cost effective ones out there as well.  The Parent and Child class will mostly likely need to be in some type of wet suit material to make it through the class.

The goals and objectives for each lesson level are below please view the links from American Red Cross in the descriptions below. If you are having difficulty choosing the correct level for your child you may contact BVRA, (570) 524-4774.  In 2020 we are looking to move our courses more in alignment with American Red Cross Curriculum.  There have been some changes please read for those changes below.

Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months to - 3 years & 11 months old)
Click For Details On The Class Skills & Descriptions  (possibly 1 or 2 classes offered a session)

Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics courses can help young children become comfortable in and around the water so that when the time comes, they are ready to learn how to swim. These courses are not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or even to survive in water on their own. They are intended to lay the foundation for future aquatic skills. One of the most valuable benefits of Parent and Child Aquatics is that it teaches parents about water safety and how to safely handle their children in and around the water. Through this philosophy and practice, the Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics courses comply with and complement the American Academy of Pediatrics statement, which recommends that formal swimming lessons not begin until after a child’s 4th birthday. As many families have experienced, these young children may still benefit from early aquatic experiences.   Parents are mandated to be in the water with their children if they are enrolled in this class.  Please get a wet suit for your child.  *Sustainable swim pants are required for all children who are not yet potty trained.  Click Here for the examples.  We do have some on site for purchase for $10.00*

Preschool Aquatics (4 yrs to 6 years)
Click For Details On The Class Skills & Descriptions (possibly 1 or 2 classes offered a session)

Red Cross Preschool Aquatics courses are targeted to children about 4 and 5 years old. The Preschool Aquatics program consists of three levels that teach fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. The program aims to meet the safety and developmental needs of this age group. The Preschool Aquatics program allows participants to move seamlessly into Learn-to-Swim courses as they get older and progress through the levels. Here at BVRA we combine everyone at the preschool level into one class and accommodate each swimmer based on which level they are in.  We do not have enough clientele to offer each tier of preschool aquatics.  Parents should still be in the water with their child to support the learning process and is not mandated.  We may ask you to join the class in the water if your child needs the support.  It will help your child build confidence and move through the curriculum quicker.  Please get a wet suit for your child. The pool has a minimum depth of 3 feet in this class.  Parents must enter the water with their children if they cannot swim or touch in the pool. *Sustainable swim pants are required for all children who are not yet potty trained.  Click Here for the examples.  We do have some on site for purchase for $10.00*

Level 1- Introduction to Water Skills  (ages 6 +, this class is combined with level 2 students for 1 class offering)
Click For Details On The Class Skills & Descriptions (first four pages of the document)

Those participating in level 1 should be able to pass the skills assessments from Preschool Aquatics to be in this class. Level 1 encourages independent development of fundamental aquatic skills without parents in the water (on first day of class). Parents of course are still welcomed if desired or needed.  This class helps participants feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. A child in this class should be tall enough to stand with head above water at 3ft. as there is a focus on beginning to work independently in our community pool or at Riverwoods.  This class requires that children be attentive to the instructor and be able to follow directions. Please get a wet suit for your child if they are on the younger and prone to being cold side.  This class is combined with level 2 students.  Similar to preschool aquatics we typically do not have enough students to have separate courses , so we combine the class and teach both curriculum.

Level 2- Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills  (ages 6 +, this class is combined with level 1 student for 1 class offering)
Click For Details On The Class Skills & Descriptions (first four pages of the document)

Your child must be able to pass the skills assessment for level 1 to be in this class (on first day of class).  Children will learn basic swimming skills. This class builds upon the skills developed in Level 1.   Children work to become more independent.  Parents really should not be in the water at this time but if your child needs your support for learning we understand and support your presence. Your child in this class should be tall enough to stand with head above water at 3ft.  Please get a wet suit for your child if they are on the younger and prone to being cold side.  This class is combined with level 1 students. Similar to preschool aquatics we typically do not have enough students to have separate courses , so we combine the class and teach both curriculum.
