Made structurally of pre-cut wood pieces, the catapults are constructed by students from scratch. Students will use an assortment of pre-cut wooden pieces and simple accessories (such as dowels and paint stirrers) to build a catapult that will effectively launch ping pong ball sized objects. Using engineering techniques to solidify the structure while also attributing to an artistic appeal, students will reinforce the wood’s bond with hot glue and then wood glue. All catapults begin with a simple structure to ensure a successful build, but then allows students to be creative with dowel placement, launch angle, and design details. Throughout the camp, students will also need to use math skills to measure arm angle and distance of launch, as well as determine proportional relationships between them. Every student will be able to take home their completed work.
