Director of Outdoor Recreation

I value leadership development through the catalyst of the outdoors.  Mother nature is one of the greatest teacher's.  I have worked in outdoor recreation since 2003.  I started working with At-Risk Youth for Outward Bound in Florida.  After three years working in the field as an Instructor, a Course Director, and Trainer I spent four months on an International Learning Adventure in South America.  I returned state side to work for a company called Avid 4 Adventure which supported youth adventure summer camps in Colorado.  At the time I also worked at REI as an outdoor equipment retailer.  My experience moved me to a non-profit in New Mexico called the Cornstalk Institute. My role was to develop an after school program to help middle school and high school students with connecting to both positive peers and positive life experiences.  The goal was to create positive outdoor recreation after school experiences in their lives in the hopes to curb drugs, alcohol, and connection to inner city gang culture within Albuquerque, NM.  Craving South America again, my wife and I helped six high school student fundraise to do a 17-day bike touring trip to Argentina.  It was a rewarding experience.  Post trip my wife and I were able to stay in South America for another eight months adventure traveling.  Upon returning to the states I worked on my M. Ed at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Higher Education Administration.  During my time I was tasked to work for ODU's Recreation Center in the Outdoor Program as the Rental Center and Trips Graduate Assistant.  Since then I have worked at two other institutions of Higher Education.  During my outdoor career I have spent over 300 + days leading wilderness experiences both domestically and internationally.  I have had certifications with AMGA, PCIA (both Rock Climbing Certifications), Project Adventure Challenge Course Level II, Project Adventure Challenge Course Manager, SOLO Wilderness First Responder Training, Wilderness EMT Training, a Wilderness First Aid Instructor for SOLO, and American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor. At BVRA we will do our best to keep our participants safe.
